केंद्र सरकार ने जनगणना 2027 का कार्यक्रम तय कर दिया है. जनगणना आयुक्त के हवाले से पीटीआई की रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, देश में 25 जनवरी से 28 फरवरी 2027 तक आबादी की गिनती की जाएगी. इससे पहले 10 से 24 जनवरी तक लोग वैकल्पिक रूप से खुद अपनी जानकारी दर्ज करा सकेंगे. इसके बाद 1 से 5 मार्च तक संशोधन का काम होगा.
सरकारी अधिसूचना के अनुसार, चुनाव वाले मणिपुर, गोवा, उत्तर प्रदेश, पंजाब और उत्तराखंड में इस चरण में जनगणना नहीं होगी. वहीं, बर्फबारी से प्रभावित लद्दाख, हिमाचल प्रदेश और जम्मू-कश्मीर के क्षेत्रों को भी इससे छूट दी गई है.
In all States and UTs except Manipur (till further declaration), Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and J&K: (i) the conduct of census of the population shall be undertaken from the 25th January, 2027 to the 28th February, 2027 with a revisional round from the 1 March, 2027 to the 5th March, 2027; (ii) for the conduct of the said census, there shall be an option for self-enumeration from the 10th January, 2027 to the 24th January, 2027, just before the start of the house to house population enumeration; (iii) the reference date for the said census shall be 00:00 hours of the 1st day of March, 2027.

भारत में जनगणना 1948 के जनगणना अधिनियम और 1990 के नियमों के तहत होती है. पिछली जनगणना 2011 में दो चरणों में हुई थी. साल 2021 में प्रस्तावित जनगणना की तैयारियां पूरी थीं, लेकिन कोरोना महामारी के कारण इसे टालना पड़ा.
Notification for the conduct of Phase II of Census 2027 i.e. Population Enumeration (PE) has been issued for all States and Union Territories, except Manipur. Notifications for four States including Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab and Uttarakhand along with the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the State of Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir had been issued previously. आजादी के बाद यह आठवीं जनगणना होगी. इसमें पहले मकानों और आवासों की गिनती होगी, फिर आबादी की गणना की जाएगी. केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने इस व्यापक प्रक्रिया के लिए 11,718 करोड़ रुपये मंजूर किए हैं.
