Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has decided to step down as UN and Arab League to civil war torn Syria, announced UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
“It is with great regret that I am announcing Annan’s resignation,” stated Ban Thursday.
The ex UN Secretary General tried to implement a peace plan between the government of President Bashar Al-Assad and militant rebels.
“I did not receive the entire support that the cause deserved. There is division in the international community,” stated Annan at a last-minute press conference.
In the meanwhile, extremely heavy fighting is reported to be continuing in Syria’s largest city Aleppo between the army and armed rebel militias.
