The body of Yasser Arafat is to be exhumed after tests suggested he was murdered by radioactive polonium poisoning.
The Palestinian Authority last night agreed to a request from his wife Suha to have an autopsy performed on the iconic leader’s remains to search for traces of a poisonous substance.
The 75-year-old died from a mysterious illness in 2004.
A Swiss institute which examined clothing which had been in storage since his death, said its radiation protection experts had found “surprisingly” high levels of polonium-210, the same substance found to have killed a former Russian spy in London in 2006.
“I want the world to know the truth about the assassination of Yasser Arafat,” Suha Arafat (48) told Al Jazeera yesterday.
