Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said on Sunday that he acted in haste and anger by announcing his retirement from international cricket in 2008. Sourav said he probably had another two good years in him.

Ganguly, who played 113 Tests for India, retired in 2008 after being left out of the squad that was to contest the Irani Trophy, and on the back of a terrible series against Sri Lanka where he averaged just 16.

The Pune Warriors captain said in Kolkata newspaper the Telegraph: “I do regret my decision (to retire) sometimes, that I should not have acted in anger.

“But I did and … That bit is done and dusted … Yes, I could have played for another two years.

“I didn’t have one good series (in Sri Lanka) and, when the Irani Trophy squad was announced, my name was missing.

“I’d stopped enjoying my game because I was thinking about things not related to my game, to my cricket. I could have probably just said ‘Let them do what they want’ and wait for my time.”

Since his retirement, Ganguly has played four seasons of the Indian Premier League, two with the Pune Warriors, who finished bottom of the heap at this year’s edition.
