Indian footballer dies after on-field injury

A football player, representing a local club, died on the field while playing in a night football tournament in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal on Sunday night.

Mahesh Thapa, 24, the son of a retired police officer and a popular player of the district, collapsed Sunday after a collision with the rival goalkeeper in a floodlit match at Netaji Vidyapith Ground on outskirts of Jalpaiguri town.

Thapa was hit in the chest by the goalkeeper’s knee and fell down.

Thapa was rushed to Hospital as his condition turned serious. Due to lack of space in the Intensive Care Unit, he had to be rushed to a private nursing home but died on the way.

A memorial service for Thapa was organised by the District Sports Association.
