Seven more infants die in West Bengal’s Malda hospital, death toll 82 in 20 days

With seven more infant deaths being reported from West Bengal’s Malda sub-division hospital in the last 12 hours, the death toll touched 82 in 20 days on Friday. As many as 39 babies have died in the past one week only.

Shocked over the continued infant deaths, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has now demanded immediate infrastructure upgrade at the Malda hospital.

As of now, the hospital has literally turned into a living hell. Mothers and relatives of the dead infants could be seen crying in grief. The visitors to the hospital are greeted by stray cats and dogs and filthy floors.

The relatives of the victims blamed the unhygienic conditions in the hospital for the continued deaths. The hospital has been reeling under severe staff shortage, both in terms of doctors and paramedics.
