Police firing on farmers: Cops caught on camera suspended

Even as Tuesday’s police firing on Pune-Mumbai Expressway threatens to snowball, two more policemen were suspended on Friday. On Thursday, six cops were suspended by Home Minister R.R. Patil.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan met the governor to brief him on the situation.

The action came after video of the policemen firing at the farmers were telecast.

The standard drill of dealing with a mob was not followed. Visuals show policemen aiming their guns and shooting at unarmed protestors while the farmers were running away. Three protesters were killed.

Shiv Sena has termed the firing as murder. The opposition held a protest outside the Maharashtra assembly on Friday. Demanding the resignation of the chief minister, the opposition MLAs took out a mock funeral procession as some of them posed as dead farmers.
