Defence ministry avoids reacting to Gen VK Singh’s controversial statements

A statement by former army chief, General (retired) V.K. Singh, who on Tuesday said that the civilian supremacy over the military, rooted in injustice, must be resisted, has understandably annoyed the ministry of defence (MoD).

Sources said that surprised and irritated by Gen Singh’s statement, Defence Minister A.K. Antony has sent down stern order that the ministry should not engage with any statements being made by the former chief.

Sources said that it was in keeping with the spirit of giving the new army chief, General Bikram Singh, the space to settle down.

The MoD does not want to be seen to be joining issue with the former chief since it believes it would only call more attention to his controversial statements.
