PA Sangma quits NCP to contest presidential election

PA Sangma is finally emerging as the rival candidate to Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential race. After refusing to stand down despite warning from his party chief Sharad Pawar of the NCP, Sangma on Wednesday quit the party and chose instead to contest against Mukjerjee.

Subramanium Swamy of Janata Dal, who met Sangma at his daughter’s residence in Delhi, told the waiting media that Sangma had decided to quit the party. NDA, led by BJP, are likely to back Sangma for the post though his chances against Mukherjee are virtually nil.

Sangma had announced his candidacy for the presidency against the NCP’s wishes and resigned a day before the party holds a crucial meeting. Sangma has campaigned himself so far and seeks support for what he calls the first tribal who will become the President.

UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee has a clear lead in the elections. The NDA is split in the elections with Shiv Sena announcing its support for him.
