The campaigning for the assembly elections in Punjab and Uttarakhand, which are slated to vote on Monday, ended on Saturday evening.
As many as 1,880 aspirants are in the fray for 117 assembly seats in Punjab while a total of 800 politicians are contesting the Uttarakhand polls for the 117-member assembly.
The key contestants in Punjab include incumbent Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from Malwa, his rebel nephew Manpreet Singh Badal and Congress’s Amarinder Singh.
Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand, where bad weather had initially hit the campaigning, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is confident of beating anti-incumbency even as the Congress is hoping to win on its own.
In an interesting development, Congress veteran N D Tiwari on Wednesday jumped into the race of chief ministerial post in the event of his party returning to power in Uttarakhand.
The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to ensure free and fair polls in both the states slated on January 30.
